UPM DIETITIAN INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

hi and a very good morning/ afternoon/ night to whoever read this blog.

so before I delve futher into my experiences on interviewing for dietitian course in UPM (Universiti Putra Malaysia), I want to give a bit of education background about myself. Well, my surname is sya and I am a 19 years old pre-university student. So, I put dietitian as my 4th option on my upu.. you guys must have been wondering why I put it at fourth.. well at first, my ambition was to become a dentist but then I mess up my sciences subject in SPM which is chemist and biology... I didn't meet the SPM requirement which are B on those two subjects as I only managed to scored B for it..( I guess it is not good enough as you need an A to secure the position) then I decided to pursue on veterinary with the hope on getting called for the interview but sadly I didn't get called :( so that's why my first choice in upu was veterinary in UPM, 2nd was veterinary in UMK.. and for the third choice, I put dietitian in UKM.. bare in mind that your upu choices are really important as the interviewer will refered to it and ask questions regarding it..

so for dietitian in UPM, there are 2 stages of interviews. The first one is making a (very) short video about dietitian topic. For my case, I got the topic "Dietery Mnagement for People with Dyslipedimia" and you need to make a video of you talking about this topic in about 1 minute..yes 1 minute is the maximum..so short right? so ya.. I guess the tips on acing this part is that you need to give as many information as you can while making it short and easy to understand (like straight the point kinda video) and also, you need to showcase your creativity while doing it.. my tips was to put font ,transition and music background but make sure the music volume was low that you can still hear your voice throughout the video)

so if you succeed this part, you will get an email by them after a month of submitting the video. So after you had been selected to next stage of the interview, you are asked to come to UPM (fakuliti sains dan kesihatan) at serdang. So this is all the scary part began....

As for me, this is the first interview I ever experienced in my entire life. And what I can say is that, it was indeed an interesting and an eye opening experience. From this interview, I got to learn and identify my weaknesses and what are the things I needed to improve in terms of my social skills and teamwork.

so first, this interview started at 8:30 am until 5pm but actually it ended way early than the scheduled time.. So you need to come 30 minutes early and are required to register first .. after you registered, you will get a badge with your name, your group and session.. as for me, I got group number 9 and session 3 which is the last session of the interview....after you got your badge you will enter the dewan kuliah and need to wait there.. there's tag on the seat so you need to look which seat and row you need to sit based on your given group and session..

As for my time, there's a total of 10 groups and session 1,2 and 3. The time of the interview is differ for each session.

for session 1: 9am until 10am

session 2: 10am until 11am

session 3 (the last session): 11am until 12pm

after your session is called, you need to take a group photo and then you will be headed to the bilik tutorial for the interview..

As for my time, each group consist of 5 peoples and there is 3 interviewers in total. The first interviewer was the dietetic lecturer in UPM, the second one was a dietitian and the last one was an alumni of UPM that studied ditetetion.

so, what do they ask you and was the interview conducted in bm or english?

well, first they will ask you the basic question which are "sila perkenalkan diri, dan beritahu pilihan UPU anda" .. yes this is why I said earlier that your choices in upu is important as the interviewer will ask questions regarding it.

so in my case, the interview speak in bm first so that's why I thought you need to speak in bm all the time but actually it is not. It depends on you either you want to speak bm or english.. As for me, I spoke bm during the first two questions asked by the interviewer then I use and spoke fluent english as I think it is easier for me to explain my answer in english rather than in bm..

questions asked:

-explain about yourself and your top 3 upu choices

-why you want to be a dietitian?

(things to alert: they will ask further question regarding the answer you give. For instance, one of the member in my group said that she want to be a dietetion as she can learn how to cook food that is suitable for people suffered with heath concern but then the interview asked her "do you think a dietetion need to be good at cooking".. so ya... you need to be extra prepared for this question.

-what are the branches in dietitian?

(things to alert: make sure you really know from A to Z the branches in dietetion.. you need to know how to explain each of the branches.. I said this because during my time, I said public health dietitian and then the interviewer asked me "what do you know about public health dietetion? can you explain to us" so ya.. make sure you guys make a good amount of research about it )

-question about food management based on your region

for instance my partner that is from Pulau Pinang was asked: " nasi kandar is popular in penang, so as a dietetion what is the dietetary management for people that loves to eat nasi kandar while being diagnosed with diseases")

-whats the difference between a nutritionist and dietetiton?

-what do research dietition do?

(they asked this to test us , if we really knows what is the role of dietition in many fields)

-if you didn't get this degree in UPM, what is your plan?

-why you put dietitian in UPM as your 2nd choice in upu and not first

(for this one, my interview partner was asked as she put UKM dietitian as her 1st option and UPM dietitian as her 2nd option)

-what is the saddest thing you ever experienced in your life

(for this one ...wow I never expected they will ask this kinda question you know.. like it is so random yet hard to give a decent answer in my opinion but ya.. I still managed to answered it and relate my answer with nutrition stuff haha )

-group discussion

(they will show you 1 picture and you will need to discuss together what is the role of a dietitian in that situation)

for this part, we got the situation of: what is the role of dietitian while treating an ICU patient

-for this one, if you already out of ideas or all of your ideas already being said by your other interview partner, what can I suggest is that you need to elaborate their ideas more.. so please.. pay attention to what your partner said as you still can use their answer for your turn.

after finished with the group discussion, they will ask if you have any qeustions to ask them.

and also, I think there was about  100 + peoples that attended to that interview and as what I heard from the senior and other blogs, they will only selected 30 peoples only for this course..yes 30 peoples... so the persaingan to get placed in this course was really high.. As what I learn from my experience is that, you need to be confident (not over confident), smile all the time and shows that you really have a high interest on learning and becoming a dietitian.  As from all the questions, I noticed that what they really want from it is that they want to identify if we really are aware about the role of a dietitian and what's like to be a dietitian in Malaysia.

GAMBAR DEWAN KULIAH (tempat menunggu sesi interview):

GAMBAR BADGE GILIRAN (with name, group, session):

K9: means group 9

S3: means session 3

so I think that's all I want to share to all of you right now.. I hope my experiences will helps you to get ag grip on how the interview will be conducted and it will helps with your preparation in some ways.. once again congrats if you were one of the people that were selected to go to the interview and I will wish you all the best :)

UPDATE: I am now a 2nd year dietetic student:) Can’t believe I got to further studying this degree at my dream uni. So grateful 🩷
